I am interested how many variations are still there even before making the candidate move on the board, COW was already showing this, but it does not show the numbers when there is only 1 variation left after making the candidate move on the board.MikeAtBookup wrote:Every variation... ends. That fact that you're near the end of a variation has nothing to do with the fact that you're following a variation. In your example, the variation will end in the position after the last move. I suppose you can say that THAT position has no variations but that's obvious because it has no candidate moves.sagisag wrote: If the candidate move is the last move then there will no longer be a variation after making that candidate move on the board.

Re: Count of positions
That is correct. As I've said in most of the comments to this thread, when it comes down to one variation there is no point in showing the '1' so it isn't displayed.
This is the most common case in opening databases. The author will show a move and, in the comments of the resulting position, explain why the move is inferior. Or someone has imported games into the ebook so the one and only variation is the rest of the game.
So, for that most common case, the 1 is not displayed.

There is point in 1, the user will be informed that there is 1 left when a candidate move is played on the board. You can even add zero if no other moves will follow, to make the number of variations display consistent.MikeAtBookup wrote:That is correct. Re: Count of positions
I think you are still thinking that the number of variations has something to do with now many moves are left in the variation. It's only job is to tell you if there are multiple variations in the future. If there are not multiple variations in the future, then it is blank.
It doesn't make any sense to me to have this number mean something else (such as the variation is about to end so show a zero).

Lets go back here in the following image. I need COW to be consistent.MikeAtBookup wrote:I think you are still thinking that the number of variations has something to do with now many moves are left in the variation. If it is 3, it is 3, if it is 2 it is 2, if it is 1 it is 1 (COW displayed blank), if it is 0 it is 0 (COW displayed blank).

I've been consistent in my answers. There is no such thing as zero. You are always in a variation.
If there are no variations, there are no candidate moves displayed and therefore no place to put a zero next to a move.

Re: Count of positions
Has there been any thought to adding a filter view to COW Candidate Move list based on number of sub-variations?
I like to build a database importing games from external sources of questionable quality and then running analysis and backsolving for new ideas. Many times there are rare variations that are mostly meaningless. I don't want to delete them for historical reference, but it would be nice to engage a filter to limit the display to Candidate Moves that have at least X leaf nodes where X can be set according to personal preferences.
i.e. a line that has 50,000 is more statistically significant to look at than one that has just 15. If I do want to look at the 15, I'd want to disengage the filter and have them displayed. Otherwise, I would focus my attention on the most commonly played lines.
