COW-PRO 2016 setup issue

Post by Stan »

After a short hiatus I tried accessing COW-PRO on my Windows 10 PC which failed with an error. So, I uninstalled it with the intention of re-installing it.
I downloaded the latest setup file for build 81. When I ran the the setup it gave me the following error:

C:\Users\xxx\Documents\Chess Opening Wizard 2016\Fonts\Fig-TB-1.TTF
An error occurred while trying to create a file in the destination directory.
The system cannot find the file specified.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

The file referenced in the error existed in the specified directory so I hit the Ignore button but then the same message appeared for another file. So, I ultimately chose to Abort.

Thanks in advance for any help someone can give me with this issue.

I've never seen this issue with the Windows installer. My best guess is that security software is preventing the installer from writing the files it needs. This can stem from installing first while logged in as a Windows admin and later installing as a regular Windows user.

Also, please try restarting Windows and then running the installer by itself. I cannot say how many times I've seen installer issues be resolved just by the act of restarting Windows.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

I had already tried your suggestion to restart Windows and running setup without success.

I did mention that I uninstalled the original installation of COW-PRO. I'm wondering if that is an issue.

Is there a way I can do a clean install without losing all my bookup dbs?

I solved the problem.

It was caused by a feature in Windows Defender that is meant to give certain folders protection against modification by ransomware.
Apparently some of the folders this feature protects are folders used by the Bookup setup program. Once I turned off the option I was able to run setup successfully.

These are the steps I followed:

-Open Windows Defender Security Center
-Select the Ransomware Protection entry at the bottom of the screen
-Turn off Controlled folder access
-Reboot the system
